Chess star Magnus Carlsen won his first game for FC St. Pauli in the Bundesliga. The 34-year-old world number one from Norway contributed one point to Hamburg’s 5.5:2.5 win against SG Solingen. “The team didn’t start the season well. I’m happy that I was able to help today,” said Carlsen after the Hanseatic League’s first win of the current season.
Carlsen set off in a hoodie with the St. Pauli emblem and to the sounds of “Hells Bells” by the Australian hard rock band AC/DC, which also plays when the Kiezkickers enter the Millerntorstadion during Bundesliga games made his board.
The 24-year-old Dutchman Max Warendam was waiting there. After almost four minutes of thinking, Carlsen made his move with the black pieces – only to leave the scene again at short notice.
After more than three hours, Carlsen’s opponent gives up
After playing for more than three hours, Warmerdam gave up the game after the 33rd move. After a brief handshake, Carlsen and the Dutchman analyzed the game in whispers so as not to disturb the other players.
Team member Giso Jahncke, who analyzed the match day as a substitute for the spectators on site, was very impressed by Carlsen’s commitment to FC St. Pauli: “It’s incredibly cool and still feels surreal.”
Carlsen will make his second appearance in the Hanseatic city on Sunday when St. Pauli plays against the favored Düsseldorfer SK. The Rhineland team also includes the 18-year-old Indian Dommaraju Gukesh, who was crowned the new world champion in November last year with a victory over the Chinese defending champion Ding Liren. Gukesh is not in action on weekends.
