Successful German biathlon duo starts at Schalke

The Biathlon World Team Challenge attracts thousands of winter sports fans to the Arena in Schalke every year. The German Ski Association has now nominated Vanessa Voigt and Justus Strelow for the upcoming event on December 28th.

“So many people in such a small space and such a high-caliber field, anything can happen. But of course I hope that we can sell well together,” Strelow is quoted as saying in an official statement: “In any case, I was very happy when I was asked. It is really an honor for me to be able to be a part of it.”

The last German success at the biathlon spectacle in Schalke dates back to 2016, when Vanessa Hinz and Simon Schempp triumphed in Gelsenkirchen.

Voigt and Strelow pulled off a coup during the last biathlon winter. In January, the German duo celebrated victory in the individual mixed competition in Antholz. An achievement that the DSV duo would love to repeat at the 21st edition of the Biathlon World Team Challenge.

Voigt and Strelow have their greatest strengths on the shooting range. “I divide my shooting into prone and standing. Since my first World Cup season, I have been good at prone shooting because I have a stable position in which I can hit the targets quickly. My hit rate is consistently high and I am happy that I have found the perfect solution,” Strelow revealed in a recent interview with the International Biathlon Union (IBU).

For him, standing shooting is a “question of concentration,” says Strelow. “In my first World Cup season, I was too nervous, made a lot of stupid mistakes and only hit 80 percent of the targets,” the 27-year-old looked back self-critically.

Strelow explained: “Last season I felt more comfortable. My private life was balanced and I was able to concentrate fully on the sport. I started the season strongly. My main goal was to maintain my focus and the high level. And I succeeded.”
