Sudanese paramilitary forces shot down a foreign plane in Darfur, Russians may have been on board – World – News

Sudan’s paramilitary Rapid Support Force (RSF) said on Monday it shot down a foreign plane in western Darfur. Information immediately appeared that Russian citizens might have been on board.

Not many details are known at this time. The Russian embassy in Sudan announced that it is in contact with the authorities there to clarify the circumstances of the plane crash and find out more information. “The situation is complicated by the fact that the accident site is in war-torn Darfur,” it said.

The RSF have been at war with the Sudanese army since April 2023. RSF has not yet responded to a request for comment. However, they said in a statement that they shot down a foreign military aircraft that was helping the Sudanese army. They claimed, without supporting evidence, that the plane was dropping bombs on civilians.

According to the monitoring group Armed Conflict Location and Event Data (ACLED), more than 24,000 people have been killed in the Sudanese war since it began. The Sudanese army continues an intensified offensive near Khartoum, while its allied forces battle the RSF in Darfur.
