(Health Korea News / Hae-ri Lim) The temperature dropped sharply on Sunday, the 17th. According to the Korea Meteorological Administration, the highest temperature during the day was 10℃. It was more than 10℃ lower than the highest temperature of the previous day (21℃) on the 16th. In this case, the disease that requires the most attention is cardiovascular disease. During periods of severe daily temperature fluctuations, blood vessels contract due to severe temperature changes, so the number of people suffering from cerebrovascular diseases increases. If you suddenly have slurred speech, no speech, headaches, dizziness, or visual disturbances, it may be a symptom of a stroke.
When a patient with an emergency cerebrovascular disease (stroke) such as cerebral infarction or cerebral hemorrhage occurs, the most important thing is to protect the golden time. It has a significant impact on the patient’s life and death as well as the prognosis that determines his or her future life. In particular, in the case of acute cerebral infarction in which a cerebral blood vessel is blocked, survival can be achieved only if the blocked blood vessel is unclogged through thrombolysis as soon as possible.
Professor Jang Yun-kyung (Director of the Stroke Center) of the Department of Neurology at Ewha Womans University Mokdong Hospital said, “Thrombolysis is the most effective treatment for patients with acute cerebral infarction. It involves injecting a drug that dissolves blood clots into a vein to open blocked blood vessels and prevent brain tissue from dying.” explained.
The reason why golden time is important in cerebral infarction is because once damaged brain tissue does not regenerate. If you have a stroke such as cerebral infarction and do not receive prompt treatment, the area of brain damage gradually increases from the center to the periphery over time.
Therefore, it is most important to arrive at the hospital as soon as possible after the onset of cerebral infarction symptoms. To go to a hospital that can perform thrombolysis, the fastest way is to call 119.
Professor Jang emphasized, “The prognosis is good if the injection can be administered within at least 4 hours and 30 minutes after the onset of acute cerebral infarction symptoms,” and added, “There is no need to worry about the golden time. The sooner the time, the better.”
Thrombolysis is not the only treatment for acute cerebral infarction. Because the risk of bleeding increases with the use of intravenous thrombolytics, some patients are treated with medication rather than thrombolytic therapy and are admitted to the stroke intensive care unit, where specialists carefully monitor and respond to the patient’s condition.
Professor Jang said, “After thrombolytic injection, other treatment methods such as additional intra-arterial thrombus removal procedures or emergency vascular bypass surgery may be considered depending on the area of the occluded blood vessel or the size of the cerebral infarction.”
The risk of cerebral infarction, which causes brain damage due to poor blood supply to the brain, increases in seasons when there are large temperature changes between day and night. Therefore, people with underlying diseases or those with a high risk of cerebrovascular disease need special treatment.
Professor Jang said, “When the temperature changes rapidly, blood vessels constrict, heart rate increases, and the risk of blood clots increases. Be careful with cold protection to avoid sudden changes in body temperature, control underlying diseases such as blood pressure, diabetes, and hyperlipidemia, eat a healthy diet, and eat regularly. “You need to pay attention to managing your condition through exercise,” he advised.
