Suez strengthens The future is Neutral, the Renault subsidiary dedicated to the circular economy

Renault and Suez, two historic partners in the circular economy, are further strengthening their ties. “It’s a Copernican revolution, said Luca De Meo, general manager of Renault Group, Thursday October 3, at headquarters during a press conference. And a real economic opportunity.” Suez takes a 20% stake in The future is Neutral, the Renault subsidiary dedicated to the circular economy.

The two groups have worked together for many years on the subject. Since 2008, they have developed Indra, a 50/50 joint venture between the two groups, on the recycling and recovery of ELVs (end-of-life vehicles). But also the Suez subsidiary, Boone Comenor Metalimpex (BCM), a specialist in the recycling of metal waste, in which Renault holds a 33% stake.

The two shareholders contribute 140 million euros

All these companies, Indra, BCM, but also The Remakers – remanufacturing of auto parts – and Gaïa for closed-loop recycling and battery repair are integrated into The future is Neutral which controls them. This Renault subsidiary was created in 2022 and achieved a turnover of 1 billion euros the following year. The two shareholders bring 140 million euros into the basket. “CIt’s time to intelligently reintegrate part of the value chain», Considers the boss of the car manufacturer. “All activities are profitable and by 2030, turnover will exceed 2 billion euros”says Jean-Philippe Bahuaud, general director of The future is Neutral. The objective is to offer an open circular economy platform for the needs of the automotive sector. “Stellantis and Toyota, among others, are already BCM customers. So why not go further?anticipates Sabrina Soussan, CEO of Suez.

Objective: a third of recycled materials at Renault in 2030

The know-how of this company is already widely used by Renault, which aims to integrate, in 2030, 33% of recycled materials into the production of a car. On the R5, the rate already exceeds 26%. “We are extremely motivated because circularity is truly in Suez’s DNA, recalled Sabrina Soussan. We are pioneers in transforming waste into new resources around the world. We provide circularity solutions for all types of activities. Waste is resources that we recover in terms of material or energy. In 2023 we produced 2.7 million tonnes of recycled materials. » Suez ensures the recycling of metals into secondary raw materials reinjected into production, sometimes up to two thirds of a car’s needs. And the potential remains immense because the recovery and valorization rate of ELVs can still be improved.
