Surprise in Romania. The pro-Russian and far-right candidate, Calin Georgescu, leads the first round of this Sunday’s presidential elections.
With 96% of the votes counted, Georgescu has 22% of the vote, two points ahead of his pro-European and left-wing opponent, Marcel Ciolacu, with 20%.
NATO critic, Calin Georgescu is not affiliated with any party and waged a strong campaign through social media, namely the TikTok platform.
The second round between the pro-Russian candidate and Marcel Ciolacu, current Prime Minister of Romania, is scheduled for December 8th.
