Surprise: Romania becomes the most important producer of natural gas in the European Union

Romania has become the largest natural gas producer in the European Union, according to a European Commission report.

Thus, our country produced 2.3 billion cubic meters in the second quarter of 2024, followed by the Netherlands with 2.2 billion and Germany with 0.9 billion cubic meters, notes Financial newspaper.

Gas consumption at the EU level was 61 billion cubic meters, down 6% compared to the same period last year. During this time, production was 7.7 billion cubic meters, an 18% decrease compared to the same period last year.



The report also shows that the European gas market continued to stabilize after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. At the same time, renewable energy sources now have a 52% share in electricity production.

The volume of gas imports decreased by 9% compared to the same period last year, reaching 70 billion cubic meters.

The main supplier of gas to the EU remained Norway, with a share of 34%, followed by Russia (18%), the USA (16%), North Africa (15%), Qatar (4%) and Azerbaijan (4%) .
