World champion Josh Kerr from Great Britain finished second with a deficit of 14 hundredths, and third was another American, Yared Nuguse.

Defending gold Norwegian Jakob Ingebrigtsen led almost the entire race, but remained without the precious metal in 4th place.

A big fight between Ingebrigtsen and Kerr was expected in the final, but it turned out differently. Twenty-three-year-old Hocker had so far only silver in his medal collection from this year’s indoor WC on this track, but in the end he completely caught the favorites by surprise.

At the finish line, he overtook everyone, including Ingebrigtsen, who led from the opening meters. The Norwegian set a high pace and was in the lead until the last corner.

But then he ran out of energy and, in addition to Hocker, last year’s world champion Kerr and Nuguse from the USA overtook him.

Even the new British record of 3:27.79 was not enough for Kerr to win the gold, Nuguse ran a personal record. The previous Olympic record was held by Ingebrigtsen from Tokyo with a time of 3:28.32 min.

1500 m men: 1. Cole Hocker (USA) 3:27,65 min (olympic record), 2. Josh Kerr (V. Brit.) 3:27,79, 3. Yared Nuguse (USA) 3:27,80, 4. Jakob Ingebrigtsen (Nor.) 3:28,24, 5. Hobbs Kessler (USA) 3:29,45, 6. Niels Laros (Hol.) 3:29,54, 7. Narve Gilje Nordas (Nor.) 3:30,46, 8. Pietro Arese (Tal.) 3:30,74
