It’s no secret that the Tesla Cybertruck is a vehicle that is as loved by some as it is hated by others, so much so that there are people who can’t wait to see the all-electric truck fail. But surprisingly, the Tesla Cybertruck is among the electric vehicles (EVs) with the most registrations in the US.
The Cybertruck is certainly polarizing, but it’s by no means a failure when it comes to sales. In May alone, S&P Global Mobility noted that the Cybertruck recorded 3,907 registrations. This number is enough to show that the Tesla Cybertruck is among the most registered vehicles in the US, coming in at number 5 that month.
Such an achievement is hard to ignore, especially considering the fact that the all-electric pickup truck is still in its limited Foundation series, which puts the vehicle’s price tag at over $100,000. Tom Libby, associate director of industry analysis at S&P Global Mobility, noted that the Cybertruck’s rise up the list of best-selling EVs in the US is quite surprising.

“It’s surprising because the Cybertruck is such a unique, one-of-a-kind vehicle, really as far from the mainstream as you can get. On the other hand, it doesn’t surprise me, because Elon Musk thrives on doing things like this,” Libby noted.
The Cybertruck competes in the electric pickup truck segment, which is populated by acclaimed vehicles like the Ford F-150 Lightning and the Rivian R1T. Despite the fact that the Cybertruck was released later than the Lightning and R1T, its sales exceeded those of the two competitors. For context, S&P Global Mobility noted that the Ford F-150 Lightning recorded 2,353 registrations in May 2024, while the Rivian R1T recorded 1,237 registrations.
A success for Elon Musk
Cybertruck sales are particularly impressive given that the vehicle is more expensive than the Lightning and R1T. Libby noted that the Cybertruck is in uncharted territory because it is so different from other vehicles in the pickup truck segment.
“I just don’t see how it could become a mass vehicle given its design. Elon Musk is so visionary, he’s so ahead of everyone else, and he’s been successful. That’s why I won’t reject it completely. Honestly, if it had been from another company, I would have ignored it,” noted Libby, quoted by Teslarati.
