Survey shows big gap between developers and their managers

The American software company Atlassian has released the report ”State of developer experience 2024”highlighting the work experiences of developers globally.

The survey, which is based on responses from over 2,100 developers and leaders in various industries, shows the disagreements that exist between leaders and developers regarding, among other things, how problems should be solved and the use of AI.

As many as 97 percent of the developers who participated in the study state that they lose time because their work is inefficiently organized, of which 69 percent respond that they lose eight hours or more per week. Only 44 percent of developers believe their managers are unaware of the issues that negatively impact their work experience.

While the developers in the study believe that technical debt, i.e. the work that must be done to fix previously deficient work, and insufficient documentation are causes of the time loss, the managers point to understaffing, that the developer role has become more extensive and the large amount of technical knowledge needed. This not only creates frustration among developers, but also means that leaders are likely to fix the wrong problems, writes Atlassian.

Disagreement on how important the AI tools are

The gap between what developers and managers consider to be the biggest problems is also made clear when the issue of AI tools is raised. Leaders see AI as the biggest key driver of improved productivity and work experience, while two out of three developers have not experienced significant productivity gains from using AI tools.

Atlassian believes that the research they have conducted is important to be able to give recommendations to leaders on how productivity can be measured and improved, while taking developers’ concerns seriously. Trying to improve the working environment for developers without asking the developers what needs to be improved is like “looking for the phone in the house while you have it in your hand,” the company writes.
