The prime suspect visited New Orleans twice in the months leading up to the Bourbon Street New Year’s Eve attack.
This is announced by the American Federal Police, FBI, on Sunday, writes the AFP news agency.
Shamsud-Din Jabbar, believed to be behind the attack, visited the city in both October and November.
On a bike ride during the visit in October, he filmed Bourbon Street through so-called smart glasses from Meta.
Smart glasses look like regular glasses, but they have a built-in camera.
On New Year’s Eve, Jabbar drove into a crowd on Bourbon Street in a rented pickup truck.
14 people lost their lives in the attack and at least 35 were injured. Jabbar was killed during an exchange of fire with the police.
He was also wearing the glasses when he carried out the attack, but here the camera was not on. They were found on him after his death.
Also found in the pickup was a flag from the Islamic group Islamic State, as well as two firearms – a pistol and a rifle.
The FBI has previously stated that the attack is considered terrorism and that the perpetrator acted on his own.
Set fire to rental property
At a press conference on Sunday, the federal police explained his movements on New Year’s Eve. Among other things, it has emerged that he set fire to the Airbnb home he had rented.
“We think his hope was to burn down the whole house to hide evidence,” according to CNN.
The fire brigade managed to put out the fire, and materials for explosives were found in the home. Similar materials were found in Jabbar’s home in Texas.
On Sunday, it also emerged that Jabbar traveled to both Egypt and Canada in 2023. The FBI is investigating whether the trips are connected to the New Year’s Eve attack.
The 42-year-old Jabbar was an American citizen and grew up in the state of Texas.
He previously served in the US Army for 13 years and was deployed to Afghanistan for one year.
