The story is well known. D-segment station wagons are increasingly encountering competition from lower-end SUVs. In this case, it is the third generation Superb that takes the hit, because the model launched in 2016 only had a single year of free play. Despite the difference in segment, the Superb Combi is 16.4 centimeters longer, it is two centimeters narrower and more than 20 centimeters lower than the SUV. Both cars are also barely inferior in terms of luggage space, the Superb and the Kodiaq offer 660 and 650 liters respectively. If you fold the bench down, the second one has the advantage with 2065 versus 1950 liters. You can only draw one conclusion: these cars are very evenly matched. Unless you need seven seats, because that option is reserved for the SUV. But beware: not every Kodiaq is a seven-seater. Prices of ‘early’ Kodiaq and Superb Combi Because the Skoda Kodiaq is relatively young, we automatically have to limit ourselves to younger Superb Combis. We set the search criteria to construction years 2017 and 2018 and choose a mileage of up to one and a half tons. This will keep you going for a while. The first Skoda Superb according to these criteria is a 1.6 TDI with 140,603 kilometers, which can be purchased for €15,900. The first available Combi with a petrol engine is a year older, but with 122,229 kilometers traveled it is slightly less experienced. Despite the fairly bare design, it is equipped with a DSG automatic transmission, which you can enjoy every day. The price is €17,499. The first Skoda Kodiaq within reach is comparable in terms of mileage and year of manufacture, but it does have a real color and more complete equipment. And a higher price, because the label says no less than € 19,950, and in the bargain you have to switch yourself. A Kodiaq with DSG is available from €21,750. And if he has to be three years young? You would almost forget that the above cars are already seven to eight years old. We can understand that you would prefer something younger, so we have now opted for year of manufacture 2021 and an odometer reading of up to 100,000 kilometers. Once again, the Skoda Superb Combi appears to be the most affordable choice. For €23,945 you even have a plug-in hybrid with automatic transmission, which has only 76,515 kilometers of experience. Here too, a comparable Kodiaq is more expensive. A Kodiaq 1.5 TSI with DSG (and 97,700 km) is the most affordable option within our new criteria. You have to leave €28,450 behind for this car, but you can then tow up to 1,800 kilograms. Two hundred kilograms more than the plug-in hybrid SUV. If we look further at the offer, we see that you can easily spend €30,000 or more for both models. Even then, the Superb Combi always seems to be the better deal. For example, take a look at this fully loaded 2021 Superb Combi Laurin & Klement PHEV, with only 58,376 kilometers on the odometer. It’s yours for €31,795, while for that money you can also have a good, but not overly fully equipped, gray Kodiaq. Unless you really need the extra towing weight, ground clearance or optional seven seats of the Kodiaq, the Superb Combi seems to be the better choice here.
