Suzuki S-Cross, what I like and what I don’t | My test

The new one Suzuki S-Cross 2024 presents itself as an original and interesting protagonist in the panorama of compact crossovers, a vehicle that tells of a tradition of simplicity, efficiency and reliability that belongs to the Japanese brand. 4.30 meters long, this car is placed in an extremely competitive segment where theThe balance between performance, efficiency and style becomes crucial. Here’s what I like and what I don’t.

What I like

The exterior design is immediately captivating attention with fluid and modern lines. The front, characterized by a renewed grille with chrome details, in my opinion gives elegance and personality, while the full LED headlights guarantee a distinctive light signature that significantly improves night visibility. Overall the appearance is certainly not revolutionary but it fully meets the expectations that a car in this segment must now meet.

The cabin is a good mix of technology and comfort. The 9-inch central touchscreen display it is complete and has clear and intuitive graphics. Wireless connectivity for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto guarantees perfect integration with smartphones, while the analog instrument panel is that “vintage” touch that could make some nostalgic people happy.

The seats, designed with ergonomic attention, welcome the driver and passengers with recycled fabric coverings, a detail that underlines Suzuki’s attention to environmental sustainability. The generous and modular load space goes from 430 to 1,300 litresmaking the car extremely versatile for every type of need.

How to drive

Under the bonnet, the beating heart is the engine 1.4 BoosterJet Hybrid, a powertrain that combines the efficiency of a traditional engine with new electrified technologies. This technical solution delivers a total of 140 horsepower, using a mild-hybrid system with a 48V battery which allows for truly low consumption. It is an engine that I found particularly elastic and which was able to guarantee more than appreciable dynamic behavior. The S-Cross is also very light and this contributes to having a much more intuitive and “personal” control of the car. The manual gearbox also works very well because it has a lever stroke that is not particularly long and the clutch pedal is rather soft and you can immediately get to grips with it.

Being an Allgrip, the traction is 4X4 and, in this sense, Suzuki remains a reference in the entire sector. The quality of the mechanics is of a high level and in general you have the feeling of being able to face complicated climatic conditions (or terrain) without the slightest uncertainty. It is an ultra-tested and very reliable system that will arouse the interest especially of those who use the car to travel in the mountains, for those who do a lot of sport in their free time or for those who appreciate being able to drive even away from the asphalt without too many worries . Excellent consumption: I recorded an average of 5.2l/100 km.

What I don’t like

Safety represents a chapter “invasive” for the S-Cross. Driving assistance systems, including automatic emergency braking, lane keeping, traffic sign recognition and adaptive cruise control, are too present. They really intervene insistently during the driving phases and compromise the serenity of the driver and passengers. The buzzes of the assistance systems are repeated too often and on all occasions. This is too much, also because there is no real command to exclude them all.

The quality of the internal materials is only moderate. The plastics are all quite stiff and you don’t have the feeling of being in a high quality car. Although the S-Cross deserves credit for being solid and reliable. The on-board entertainment system does not have many functions, in fact, it is rather limited from this point of view. There is smartphone integration to the rescue but if it were only for the internal software, the contents would be insufficient.

Who should buy it

The economic chapter sees a price of starting from 27,990 euros. The Suzuki S-Cross 2024 is not a car that revolutionizes the concept of mobility, but represents an intelligent and concrete evolution. It offers a good balance between technological efficiency, comfort and affordability. It is not the car that will take your breath away with extreme performance, but the one that will be able to accompany you in everyday life with reliability and style.

If you are looking for a versatile car that consumes little and can possibly accompany you on adventures away from the asphaltthen the S-Cross is certainly one of the most suitable cars.
