SweClockers member creates new version of Boulder Dash

SweClockers member @rh_galaxy has created his own version of the classic game Boulder Dashwhere you will try to dig your way out of caves filled with rocks, diamonds and monsters. Rh_galaxy’s version offers novelties such as bombs, mines, doors and keys, which were not in the original.

The game currently has 24 playable tracks and is also open source. The hope is that more people will contribute, for example by creating new courses for the game.

– If anyone wants to update the old man, that is welcome. Is a bit unhappy with how it looks right now, says rh_galaxy.

Rh_galaxy got the idea to create his own Boulder Dash variant after playing the original on the Amiga at the age of 11. He has been working on the game for two months, but started from an earlier version made in Java, which took three months to develop.

This is how a course can look like in the game.

The courses can be filled with all sorts of challenges.

The biggest challenge in development has been synchronizing the animations and getting good behavior on explosions and falling objects. Rh_galaxy has not used any code libraries other than SDL2 during development.

– This can be considered a bit backward when there is so much available, but I think it is more fun to have done as much as possible myself, says rh_galaxy.

The game can run on Windows, Mac OS and Linux. You can download it from Github and itch.io.
