Domestic. The government has started talks with Estonia about the possibility of renting prison places there, reports Sveriges Radio Ecot.

During Friday, Minister of Justice Gunnar Strömmer (M) met his Estonian counterpart Liisa Pakosta in Tallinn to discuss the issue.

Strömmer’s press secretary confirms via SMS to Ekot that the talks are at an early stage.

The background is the acute shortage of prison places in Sweden, a problem that the Prison Service has repeatedly raised the alarm about.

Already in December last year, the Correctional Service submitted a report in which they proposed renting places abroad as a solution. The report also included other suggestions, such as using prison ships and allowing more convicts to be shackled instead of serving their sentences in prison.
