Due to the bananaphobia of the Swedish Minister for Equality, Paulina Brandberg, not a single piece of this yellow fruit may appear near her or at official events.
She herself claims that she has an allergy, but she is not the only public figure in Sweden with this phobia, she writes BBC. In 2020, the minister wrote on Twitter that she had “the strangest phobia in the world, of bananas”, but later deleted the post.
Her morbid fear of this tropical fruit is confirmed by leaked e-mails from employees working for Brandberg, who before official visits asked the other party that there should be no bananas anywhere – not even in the rooms, conferences or adjacent areas – because the minister is “strongly obsessed” with them. allergic”.
For example, the speaker of the Swedish Parliament, Andreas Norlén, suffers from the same morbid fear. In September, he met with the minister, and in their meeting one employee wrote that “there will be a cake with the coffee and we will make sure that there is no banana in it”.
But they are not alone in this. “I suffer from the same disease. Even though Brandberg and I have many tough debates on the topic of working life conditions, we stand united against a common enemy on this issue,” said MP Teresa Carvalho.
Brandberg herself said that it is a type of allergy, and therefore it is reasonable to request premises without this fruit. At the same time, she admitted that she is being treated by a specialist for her phobia.
Bananaphobia is an unusual disorder. It can be triggered by the sight of this fruit or its smell, after which anxiety and nausea can occur. As with many other rare phobias, the triggers for banana phobia are not easily identified, but experts say they can often stem from childhood.
