Swiss public broadcaster switches off FM

The Swiss Radio and Television Corporation (SRG) plans to switch off all FM transmitters by the end of this year. There are only a few FM radios in use in Switzerland and the maintenance of FM antennas is expensive. SRG’s radio programs will continue to be received via DAB+ and the internet, according to a press release.

The advantage of DAB+ is that more channels can be broadcast than via FM. The government-funded broadcasting group has access to around 260 DAB+ antennas, while it currently operates over 850 FM transmitters.

New vehicles are usually equipped with DAB+ radios as standard, the press release continues. In the EU, new cars with radio receivers must be equipped with DAB+ receivers. For older FM models, SRG recommends an adapter.
