Alexey Bereznikov, head of the Department of Dietetics at ROSBIOTECH University, warned in a conversation with RT that systematically swallowing chewing gum can lead to appendicitis.
“The purpose of chewing gum is so that a person can remove plaque, food debris and remove bad breath. If you swallow gum once by accident, there is no danger – it will come out naturally, however, if you do this regularly, you can get appendicitis. Problems with the appendix are caused by chewing gum, bones, seeds – everything that enters the body in fractions,” he noted.
According to Bereznikov, chewing gum blocks the lumen of the appendix and creates conditions for the development of inflammation.
“If the lumen of the appendix is blocked, chewing gum can cause inflammation,” concluded RT’s interlocutor.
Previously, Bereznikov said in a conversation with RT that an ideal lunch should last 25-30 minutes.
