After the BL defeat against Aalborg, away, and against Kolstad, as a host, the Szeged team was in for a treat, and they welcomed the Polish team, Industria Kielce, who also had three wins and three defeats after the previous six rounds played, in the Pick Arena in Szeged.
The new domestic European Cup match did not start well for the Szeged players, as Kielce took a two-goal lead in the 3rd minute thanks to Theo Monar’s double. Lazar Kukics’ goal soon improved the home team’s score, but with another two-goal period, the visiting team trailed 4-1.
That’s when the turn came!
1-4 became 4-4 in a short time, thanks to one goal from Sebastian Frimmel and two goals from summer substitute Jérémy Toto. Keeping this momentum, Szeged took the lead, which was also helped by Roland Mikler’s saves.
A flurry of first innings
Of course, the score of 6-5 did not last long, after a bad pass from Szeged, the Poles quickly equalized. After that, Richárd Bodó tipped the score in favor of Szeged, but Kielce, who scored twice in the continuation, took the lead again at 8-7. This period didn’t last long either, in the 21st minute, Szeged already led 10-9.
In the remaining time of the first half, Szeged pulled ahead by two, then Kielce equalized, but the end was a two-goal victory for Szeged: the score was 15-13 at the break.
Crazy second half
After the halftime change, Michal Olejniczak scored Kielce’s first goal, and the visitors took the lead with two more goals. Szeged equalized and then took the lead, then the opponent came back again – ten minutes after the restart, the sides were tied at 17-17.
The picture of the game did not change in the continuation, although both teams took the lead, it only lasted for a while, neither team could create a bigger advantage in the following minutes. For the final 6 minutes, Szeged and Kielce were tied at 24-24 after Bodó’s shot was saved by the visitors’ goalkeeper. Then the head coach of the Poles asked for time. Michael Apelgren, who prepared the home team, did the same after a single attack, but his team was already one goal behind (24-25).
At the very end of the crazy match, of course, the dice turned again, with two goals from Mario Sostaric and Janus Smárason, Szeged won 28-26. From there, it seemed that there would be no way back for Kielce, who, however, only scored one more time, and 15 seconds before the end, they could have attacked for the equalizer. In the end, Szeged won 28-27, returning to winning ways in the Champions League after two losing games.
The Hungarian champion Veszprém HC will play in Group A at 8:45 p.m. as a guest of Orlen Wisla Plock.
