If you watch a sports game, you may see players wearing long strips of tape on their knees or shoulders. This tape, known as kinesiology tape (K-tape), is commonly used by physical therapists and sports therapists for injured patients. K-tape is usually sold in rolls and is made of waterproof, flexible cotton and nylon fabrics.

According to CNET, an American information and communications media outlet, there is an art to using K-tapes, and if not used correctly, the original purpose of using the tapes disappears.

CNET interviewed Dr. Valerie Collette, a kinesiology expert, about things to watch out for when using K-Tape.

“The purpose of K-Tape is to aid athletic performance by providing minimal swelling, support, and increased blood flow,” says Dr. Collett. “It is not intended to treat or prevent injuries and should only be worn during athletic activity.”

K-Tape is commonly used on joint areas such as the knees, shoulders, waist, and wrists. “K-Tape works by separating the skin from the connective tissue, creating space for the underlying joint to move more freely,” Dr. Collett explains. “It is believed that the tape stimulates the nervous system and modulates pain receptors, so users can benefit from pain reduction.”

Experts say that pregnant women can also benefit from K-Tape outside of exercise. “When pregnant women apply K-Tape under their stomach, it can help relieve some of the discomfort associated with swelling and back pain,” says Dr. Collett. “Studies comparing K-Tape to placebos have shown that when K-Tape is applied properly, back pain is significantly reduced.”

Dr. Collett also gave some tips on what to watch out for when applying K-Tape. First, make sure the area you are applying it to is clean and free of excessive hair. If the hair is thick, it won’t stick well. Also, make sure the tape doesn’t stretch too much and has a firm anchor point. It’s also important to apply the tape at least an hour before you start your activity and not leave it on for more than 24 hours.

Especially when there is an injury, tape should not be used. “It is best not to use K-Tape if there is a possibility of an acute injury, because if left untreated, it can mask symptoms and make the injury worse,” says Dr. Collett. “It is not recommended for very thin skin, wounds or infections, areas with reduced lymphatic drainage, active cancer, or renal failure,” he adds.
