TCL 115X955 Max / When the cinema is so good

TCL, the global leader in the category of 98″ televisions, does not rest on its laurels and in its top model series X955 brings the largest commercially available LCD television in the world with a diagonal of 115″. Due to the fact that transporting such TVs is very difficult, it is enough to mention that the TV including the packaging weighs 171 kg, I went to test it in Warsaw for the event Experts meet experts.

The last time I tested its brother with a 98″ display like this, which now, placed next to the “150”, looks like a poor relative. No wonder. You could fit almost three 65″ models on the 115″ display area. The TV is intended for construction excellent home theater, but it will also stand out in corporate or other representative spaces. It can stand on short legs in the shape of an inverted T, which are designed to stand on furniture, but there are also large legs for standing directly on the floor and you get also a hanging system designed for the wall. It has an interesting mechanism on which the TV is hung and then pressed against the wall, thanks to which its back side is only 5 mm away from the wall. The TV works in 4K resolution and at the recommended viewing angle a distance of 4 m provides a field of view of up to 60°, i.e. the same as when watching a 30-meter screen in the cinema. You cannot hide any image defects on such a large image, so the quality of image processing, hardware performance, and panel quality matter all the more.

The novelty works in Ultra HD 4K resolution and is equipped with a VA LCD panel with a layer of QLED quantum dots and a blue mini LED backlight with 20,736 local dimming zones. The TV uses the latest generation of mini LEDs, all of which contain up to 6 PN junctions, so the backlight is actually handled by up to 124,416 mini LEDs, resulting in a massive peak brightness of up to 5000 nits. The TV thus meets the Dolby Vision 4000 specification from Netflix, respectively the HDR Premium 5000 certification. The QLED layer primarily takes care of accurate color display. Under blue backlighting, this layer creates precise shades of red and green, resulting in a precisely defined white color in the RGB space. It enables a very accurate display of the entire spectrum and, of course, a flawless display of Dolby Vision and HDR10 content. Thanks to a large number of dimming zones, it is possible to precisely define places in the image from the highest brightness to the deepest black, and in this way limit the halo effect, i.e. the parasitic glow around very contrasting objects, as much as possible. This significantly increases the dynamic range of the display, which reaches more than 21 stops in HDR10 or Dolby Vision mode. The panel has a color depth of 10 bits, but the mini LED backlight system uses up to 12-bit linear brightness control.

The TV works natively with a frequency of 120 Hz, which switches to 144 Hz during games with 144 Hz Motion Clarity Pro technology. To top it off, with Game Master Pro 3.0, HDMI 2.1, ALLM, FreeSync Premium Pro, TCL Game bar, 240Hz Game Accelerator and support for all the latest HDR formats, this TCL Mini LED TV is the best device to stream and watch all HDR movies. sports broadcasts and games. In Europe, two-thirds of TVs purchased today have UHD resolution, but most of the content delivered remains in lower resolutions. In the upscaling and processing of these materials, TCL AiPQ 3.0 plays a key role in the area of image brightness and clarity, and the Pentonic 700 chip solves processing problems. The new generation of DL CNN AI (Convolutional Neural Networks) further improves this process by making better use of the details of edges and interior regions based on a wider range of training models. Another significant improvement is the increase to 10-bit gradation, which greatly helps content quality with PC games or sources such as UHD BD, where it preserves subtle shades of color transitions without smearing. The processor also solves low-light quantization, which is crucial especially in very dark scenes, where it prevents the creation of large mosaics, and it also copes very well with SDR material with a low data rate, which is the cause of posterization artifacts. The static brightness of the 115X955 model reaches 800 nits, so you can use it without problems even in a room with access to sunlight. In comparison, OLED TVs achieve a static brightness of around 200-300 nits.

The color gamut values correspond to the excellent color rendering, where the TV reaches 100% of the DCI-P3 color space and up to 78% of the color space according to Rec.2020. The protection of the spectators’ eyes against the emission of blue light is confirmed by the TUV Rhineland certificate.

A top-quality picture also includes a top-quality sound. The TCL 115X955 is the only model in the line equipped with an Onkyo sound unit with Dolby Atmos and DTS:X support, with a 6.2.2 speaker configuration and a power of 120 W. The sound has sufficient power and provides a very good spatial perception. The TV is also available with 85″ and 98″ diagonals, the sound part of which works in a 4:2:2 configuration. The TV is powered by Google TV. All the most used streaming platforms are pre-installed, the others can be easily installed. The whole environment is easy to control and fast. The TV provides excellent image and sound quality and is one of the top on the market today.
