TCL 50 SE Hands-On Review: “Performance and reliability for under 150 euros… is it possible? But it is possible”!

TCL is the company that, if nothing else, has been putting the term “Democratization of Mobile Technology” into practice for years, offering solutions that tend to bring us closer to the dynamics of smartphones, without having to shake our financial budget airborne. With the TCL 50 SE, the Chinese company presents us with another proposal, which combines looks, performance and a super low price, as it “plays” below the psychological limit of 150 euros.

After all, our well-known TCL has now established itself in the category of vfm smartphones with quality and elegant proposals that cover the average user but mainly for the screen and projection technologies that it has been developing in recent years. The “tip” of its spear is the NXTPAPER technology and beyond its tablets, we can also enjoy it on smartphones, such as the new TCL 50 SE that fell into our hands and came to the Greek market! Let’s see it…

After noting that “next to” the device is also launched TCL 50 5G but also the TCL 505which you will see in another article and video as it has noticeable differences, let’s say they all have “serious” differences quality design and feel, especially in the version we had in our hands, in gray color (Space Gray). The camera module does not “stick out” an eye, but this means that it protrudes a little and in general we liked the appearance of the device, with thickness 8.1mm and weight 195 gr. In the package you will find one USB Type-A to Type-C cable and also a 33W charger. The grip is excellent and thus the need for a holster is greatly reduced.

THE screen is the highlight of all NXTPAPER models and we have no exception here. IPS LCD panel 6.78″ with 90Hz refresh rate and FullHD+ resolution with 550 nits brightness (typ), hole-notch for the selfie camera and bezels of normal size, but the good things start from the… menu. In the view settings you will find all NXTPAPER functions and features to keep your eyes rested after long hours of use but also to enjoy the feel and look of “paper”with less intense colors or even in black and white projection for e-book reading! Let’s emphasize that protection from blue light certified by ΤÜV Rheinland.

The Android 14 (and planned upgrade to A15) combined with the TCL UI and barring a few extra pre-installed apps, it’s lean and user-friendly. Inside the device it dominates MediaTek Helio G88 with Mali-G52 MC2 GPU, offering good thermal behavior, low consumption and decent performance. Yes, thanks to the function NXTURBO, the device can give “something more” to gaming, if needed, so that the framerate does not decrease! The RAM amounts to 6GB but it expands via virtual RAM while storage is 256GB and expands through microSD (which occupies the position of the 2nd SIM).

In the field of photography and video, the main camera of 50MP she is the one who does almost all the work, successfully, thanks to f/1.8 aperture and PDAF, offering good downloads. At her side a 2MP macro camera and one 2MP depth camerafor portraits and close-ups, while it is supported HDR and 1080p video capture at 30FPS. Their selfie receives the same video 8MP, which also supports HDR.

The sound comes from two stereo speakers, quite powerful, while there is also an audio jack. In the advantages and the “boost” of the sound by DTS (Digital Theater Systems), which offers up to 200% higher volume if you want it. In terms of connectivity you will enjoy 4G, Wi-Fi ac (dual-band, Wi-Fi Direct), BT 5.1 with A2DP and LE but also NFC, as well as FM Radio, with the Type-C port to be 2.0. THE fingerprint sensor it is built into the power/lock button and works quite well. We close with the autonomy which is excellent thanks to their battery 5,010mAh, which recharges up to 33W with the corresponding charger (50% in 30′).

The TCL 50 SE available in Greece for €145 and we unreservedly recommend it to those who use their mobile for many hours every day and in general to those who place importance on viewing and viewing, while it is also a good solution for younger users (children and teenagers), thanks to the eye protection it can provide . Without a doubt an affordable device “winner” in the category under 150 euros.
