Domestic. Families bring lawyers at their own expense to the children’s development talks at school, according to the Teachers’ Association. Now education minister Lotta Edholm (L) wants to rewrite the school act to prohibit students from hiring legal help to exercise their right, writes Today’s News.
It occurs, among other things, that lawyers ask teachers to justify their grading, which the union considers unacceptable and threatens the safety of teachers in their exercise of authority.
– You demand to see exam results and to see how the teacher has assessed various assignments. You end up in a work environment that is unreasonable and unsafe, I would say, says Britt-Marie Selin, chairman of Sweden’s Teachers Stockholm, to DN.
If the teachers are asked to justify their decisions, they may be forced to take sick leave in protest, the union warns.
– There are a lot of teachers who end up on sick leave after this type of event, says Britt-Marie Selin to DN.
Education Minister Lotta Edholm (L) tells DN in a written comment that lawyers in school are “unacceptable” and that school laws and curricula need to be “rewritten so that it becomes clear that it is the teachers who decide”.
However, the Administration Act may also need to be rewritten, as it stipulates that everyone has the right to be represented by a representative. The minister would thus have to introduce an exception in the Administration Act which stipulates that the provision does not apply to school students in contact with Swedish schools.
