Telia stops a record number of fraud attempts

New technology means that Telia has stopped two fraudulent calls per second in the first half of 2024.

Telia reports that in the first half of 2024 it has managed to stop 30 million fraudulent calls, which corresponds to approximately two calls every second. As a comparison, it is mentioned that during the whole of 2023 they managed to stop 33 million fraud calls.

The reason for the dramatic increase is said to be a new technology that was introduced in December 2023, which makes it possible to stop “spoofed” calls from Swedish mobile numbers belonging to Telia. Spoofed mobile calls involve fraudsters masking their real phone number and making it appear as another number when they call. This can be used to trick the recipient into thinking the call is coming from a trusted source, such as an authority or a well-known company, when in fact the call is being made by fraudsters.

In more detail, 11 million spoof calls have been stopped, while the rest of the stopped scam calls can be attributed to wangiri, a method where the victim is called from unknown international numbers with a ring tone in order to get the person to call back, which can result in a high fee.
