(Seoul = Newsis) Art reporter Park Hyeon-ju = A photography exhibition similar to a sculpture exhibition is being held.

Artist Hyunmi Yoo (60), who magically uses sculptures, paintings, and photographs, will hold a solo exhibition (Good Luck: Ten Symbols of Longevity) at Museum Hanmi in Samcheong-dong, Seoul on the 19th.

We are revealing 15 new works from the ‘Ten Longevity Symbols’ series, which incorporate traditional Korean materials in a modern way, as well as actual sculptures.

The work, which causes confusion in perception of what is seen to the point of saying, “It doesn’t look like a photograph at all,” is powerful. It is three-dimensional, yet gives a two-dimensional and four-dimensional feeling, and the directing power is so strong that it seems as if it could be taken as a photograph.

Compressing time and space into a photograph is a complex process. The object is created, and the space where the object is installed is colored. Light and shadow are then added to create a sense of three-dimensionality, and the photograph is completed.

This is a ‘hybrid work’ that combines the characteristics of space, sculpture, photography, painting, and video, allowing the viewer to experience a unique and unfamiliar feeling that moves between the flat and the three-dimensional, painting and photography, and dreams and reality.

‘Good Luck: Ten Longevity Symbols’

The exhibition introduces the Ten Symbols of Longevity for 2024, reinterpreted in a modern way by Yoo Hyun-mi. The Ten Symbols of Longevity refer to ten symbols (sun, clouds, water, stone, pine tree, bamboo, lingzhi, turtle, crane, and deer) that represent immortality.

Considering that salvation is a fundamental theme and that the desire for happiness is universal across the East and the West, the ten symbols of longevity were replaced with materials commonly seen in everyday life. It shows the process of delving into the hybridization of East Asian tradition and modernity with a long-term interest.

The author hoped, “Through this exhibition, I hope that everyone can directly project their own wishes for happiness onto the world of the ten symbols of longevity.”

The Hanmi Museum will hold an artist talk on the 27th where visitors can learn about the artist’s world of work. There will also be a workshop program with the artist and visitors on August 24th and September 7th. The exhibition will run until October 6th. Admission is free.
