The 17-year-old Sydney Zick is probably more familiar to insiders in the German tennis scene. No wonder, as the DTB talent’s appearances on the professional tour were few and far between – and rarely successful. But out of nowhere, Zick has caused a real bang.
Sydney Zick is currently competing in his eighth ITF event at the M25 tournament in Monastir, Tunisia. Matches won have been in short supply so far; Zick was previously only in the main draw in Überlingen (M15) in August, but there he failed against the Thai Thanaphat Boosarawongse. Now the first victory outside of qualifying followed.
On Thursday, Zick, who had already fought his way through the qualification with three wins in Monastir, completely surprisingly beat second-seeded Italian Enrico Dalla Valle (number 275 in the world rankings). A bang from the German, who has not yet been able to collect any points for the ATP ranking.
In the round of 16, however, Zick suffered a bitter blow – probably also due to a not insignificant disadvantage. Against the 25-year-old Algerian Toufik Sahtali (currently not in the world rankings), Zick suffered a huge defeat with 1:6 and 1:6.
However, since his game against Dalla Valle on Wednesday had to be canceled and continued on Thursday, it was Zick’s second match on Thursday. So Sahtali was significantly more rested.
Dedura-Palomero fails in Antalya
Another German player, Filip Krolo (number 1436 in the world rankings), is fighting for advancement in Monastir. However, Krolo is a complete underdog against the Portuguese Tiago Pereira (number 536 in the world rankings).
Meanwhile, DTB youngster Diego Dedura-Palomero had to cope with a setback in Antalya (M15). The 16-year-old, who had already climbed to position 642 in the world rankings in 2024, had to admit defeat to the Serbian Stefan Popovic (number 435 in the world rankings) 4:6 and 5:7 in the round of the last 16.
