Tennis: Olympic shock for Jannik Sinner

Olympic shock for Jannik Sinner! The current number one in the world rankings had to cancel the games in Paris just one day before the draw. The Dane Holger Rune also has to miss out.

The Italian, who won the Australian Open at the beginning of the year and thus his first Grand Slam title, cited tonsillitis as the reason for his withdrawal.

After a week of clay court training in preparation for the tournament in Roland Garros, he began to feel “unwell,” Sinner said, adding: “I spent a few days resting.” After that, a doctor diagnosed “tonsillitis” and “strongly” advised him not to take part in Paris.

“It is a big disappointment that I am missing the Games because it was one of my main goals for this season,” said Sinner. After all, he could hardly wait “to have the honor of representing my country at this very important event.”

At Wimbledon, Sinner was surprisingly defeated in the quarterfinals by Russian Daniil Medvedev. The South Tyrolean already looked exhausted during the match on July 9th.

Sinner’s Olympic exit has increased Alexander Zverev’s chances of successfully defending his title. His biggest competition is now Carlos Alcaraz, who is currently in top form. The Spaniard won the title at both the French Open and Wimbledon.

Zverev nun Mitfavorit bei Olympia?

Rafael Nadal recently let it be known that he is still searching for form. “My level was so far from where it should be. Probably my energy too,” he said after losing to Portuguese Nuno Borges in the final in Bastad.

The clay court king recently cancelled his participation in the grass court classic in Wimbledon in order to concentrate on his Olympic preparations.

Physically, Zverev is feeling better after the knee injury he suffered at Wimbledon. Even the exhausting tournament in his hometown of Hamburg, with the dramatic defeat in the final last Sunday against the Frenchman Arthur Fils, apparently did not harm the healing process.

“Hamburg was tough, but now it’s okay,” said the 27-year-old, who played without a knee brace in the most recent training session with teammate Maximilian Marterer.

Rune also missing from the Olympics

Dane Holger Rune will also miss the Summer Games due to a wrist injury. The former fourth-ranked player in the world has struggled with his form this season.

“I’m really sorry I can’t take part in the Olympics,” the 21-year-old said on social media. “I played with wrist pain in both the clay and grass seasons, so I have to take the medical recommendations seriously.”
