Tens of thousands of Boeing workers could go on strike

If the negotiations do not go as expected by the employees, the strike of the employees at Boeing could start soon, notes Reuters.

Boeing workers on the US West Coast will vote on a contested new contract and the possibility of a strike, increasing pressure on the company, which is already grappling with production delays and mounting debt.

The roughly 30,000 workers in Seattle and Portland, who make Boeing’s 737 MAX, 767 and 777 planes, will decide on the first full contract in 16 years.

An overall salary increase of 25%

The results of the vote will be announced by the International Association of Aerospace Workers (IAM). The draft contract offers a 25 percent overall salary increase, a $3,000 signing bonus and the promise to build the next Boeing commercial jet in the Seattle area.

However, the workers were unhappy, initially demanding a 40% increase and criticizing the loss of an annual bonus.

Many are already preparing for the strike, which they believe could force the company to improve its offer.

The last strike by Boeing workers, in 2008, lasted 52 days and caused losses estimated at $100 million a day.
