Bitter are the comments written so far about Google’s Tensor G4 chip and the negative atmosphere is reinforced by a new news that shows some disappointing performances of this chip. Sure, for a device like the Pixel 9 it’s disappointing to say the least not to see top-end performance corresponding to other 2024 flagships.
Now a new comparison to known benchmark reveals that the Tensor G4 contends with both current and past flagship SoCs. It couldn’t even beat the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, a 2021 chipset.
The independent reviewer, Golden Reviewer, compared the Tensor G4 with leading chipsets in the demanding 3DMark Wild Life Extreme. The results show that the Tensor G4 outperforms its predecessor, the Tensor G3, but the improvement does not exceed 7%. While this shows some generational improvement, it’s a relatively small jump.
More concerning for some users is the Tensor G4’s inability to outperform the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, a chipset released in 2021. In fact, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 holds a slight lead of around 2% in this benchmark test. This performance gap compared to a chip three generations old shows that Google is clearly behind other SoCs in terms of performance.
The difference becomes even more pronounced compared to the current Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 and indeed the latest Qualcomm processor model it scores over 100% higher than the Tensor G4 at the same benchmark point.
However, it’s important to remember that Google has already clarified its previous statements about the focus of the Tensor G4. The company prioritizes AI capabilities over raw scores in such metrics tests. The company’s philosophy aligns with Pixel phones’ strengths in computational photography and in-device AI functions.
Despite the poor results, there is some good news. Google is reportedly planning to build its 2025 Tensor chip using the advanced 3nm process of TSMC, removing Samsung’s process. This change could bring significant improvements in both performance and efficiency.
