Early Sunday morning, a tragic accident occurred on the side of the M3 highway heading towards Vásárosnamény, at kilometer 138. Two cars collided, as a result of which one person died on the spot and two others were seriously injured, reports szmo.hu
According to the disaster management report, the accident involved a car with a Hungarian license plate and a car with a Romanian license plate. One of the passengers traveling in the back seat of the Hungarian car died immediately as a result of the collision, the driver suffered serious injuries, and another passenger suffered life-threatening injuries. The passengers of the Romanian car escaped the accident with minor injuries.

Tamás Dobi, the press officer of the Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén County Police Headquarters, said that the accident was probably caused by the fact that the driver of the Romanian car fell asleep at the wheel. The vehicle crashed into the Hungarian car in front of it at high speed without braking.
The on-site investigation and the diversion of traffic are currently underway, at the Mezőkeresztes exit, traffic is being directed to highway 3. Significant traffic jams occurred on the M3 as a result of the accident, the police are investigating the circumstances of the incident.
