In 2024, Tesla continues to be the global leader in the electric car market, but its position is threatened by the growing competitiveness of the Chinese BYD. Despite a marginal decline in sales, with 1,789,226 vehicles delivered compared to 1,808,581 the previous year, Tesla remains in first place. However, BYD recorded impressive numbers, with 1,764,992 electric cars sold, reducing the gap to just over 24,000 units.
Tesla and BYD, overtaking China in 2025?
BYD’s growth trend is more accelerated, with an increase of 12% in 2023 compared to the previous year, while Tesla saw a more modest increase of just 1%. On a quarterly basis, BYD has already surpassed Tesla, highlighting a trend that could lead to a definitive overtaking. In fact, in the fourth quarter of 2023, Tesla delivered 495,570 vehicles, while BYD surpassed 595,000, registering an impressive growth of 13.11% compared to the previous year.
Another worrying fact for Tesla is the slowdown in the production of its best-selling models, the Model 3 and the Model Y, which they represent more than 95% of the company’s sales. In 2024, Tesla produced approximately 1,773,000 vehicles, down from the previous year, while the Chinese continue to benefit from large growth in the domestic market, where 90% of BYD’s sales are concentrated.
BYD, however, is expanding its operations overseas, but with a significant concentration of sales in China. Sales growth of auto ibride plug-in (PHEV) was notable in 2024, with an increase of 72.83%. BYD’s ability to sell over 4,250,000 vehicles, with a 41% jump compared to the previous yearis a sign that the company is becoming a major force in the global automotive industry, with the potential to overtake historic brands like Honda and Ford.
