Tesla Cybertruck sells almost as much as all other electric pickup trucks combined

It’s one of the most controversial vehicles of recent years. The Tesla Cybertruck divides opinions, but the truth is that it already sells almost as much as all other electric pick-ups on the American market. And it’s not in Europe…

It's not a peaceful model at all. Some people love it, others hate it. However, Tesla's Cybertruck remains extremely popular. In fact, it's currently more popular than all other electric pickup trucks on the market.

Tesla Cybertruck registrations in July (according to data from S&P Global Mobility, released by Automotive News and for the United States, its main market) nearly equaled the total number of registrations of other electric pickup trucks, suggesting strong demand for the angular stainless steel vehicle.

Tesla's overall vehicle sales also rose in July, driven by the Cybertruck.

In July, the Tesla delivered 5,175 Cybertrucks, compared to a combined total of 5,546 registrations for all other electric pickup trucksincluding the Ford F-150 Lightning, Rivian R1T, Chevy Silverado EV and Hummer EV. (Tesla doesn’t break out Cybertruck numbers in its delivery reports, so S&P is relying on registration numbers to draw these conclusions.)

It should be noted that Tesla had a 48% share of all electric vehicle registrations in July, down from 56% in the same period last year, reflecting increased competition in the electric vehicle market.

Overall, electric vehicle registrations are increasing, but electric pickup trucks still represent a small part of that market.

Tesla still appears to be selling every Cybertruck it can produce, but it still has a long way to go, considering the reported delay of 2 million pre-orders. The Cybertruck's entry price has been increased several times and is now nearly $100,000. Many who have pre-ordered will have to wait a long time to get their hands on one.

The glass that finally broke...

The Cybertruck was revealed by Tesla in November 2019, in an event that quickly went viral.

One of the most striking demonstrations was when Elon Musk asked to test the durability of the vehicle's windows, which, despite being advertised as "bulletproof glass", ended up shattering during the live demonstration, causing a mix of surprise and humor on social media. Still, the event was a success, and the Cybertruck's bold design captured the attention of millions of people around the world.

Unconventional design

The Cybertruck’s polarizing design, with its sleek lines and sci-fi appearance, is a far cry from traditional pickup trucks, and has been divisive. Its body is constructed from stainless steel, making it extremely durable. The interior offers a host of high-tech features, including Tesla’s “Autopilot” and a minimalist dashboard with a large touchscreen.

It is also designed to have an impressive towing capacity and top off-road performance. Tesla has announced several versions, with different battery ranges, reaching up to 800 km on a single charge, and acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in less than 3 seconds, depending on the configuration.

The Cybertruck thus marks a new era in the electric pickup truck segment and challenges traditional expectations for this type of vehicle. With large-scale production already underway, the impact on the electric vehicle market and the automotive industry in general is yet to be fully understood.
