Tesla didn’t see the deer standing in the middle of the road

In many cases, you can’t prepare for a deer jumping in front of your car, but it’s different when you’re standing in the middle of the road and still have plenty of room and time to avoid a collision. Tesla’s Self-Driving System (FSD) was not up to the task, so instead of stopping, the car drove towards the animal practically without braking, as recorded by the on-board camera:

After the run-over, the driver said he believed he was using the autonomous function in conditions where it should: on the highway, with light traffic – although, since it was night, visibility was not the best. He added that the Model 3 did not stop even after the accident happened, which can be explained by the fact that Tesla’s image recognition function, which is quite bare-footed and does not use sensors or other technologies, is not so reliable in such a situation.

As the Drive he noted that the driver is also responsible for hitting the deer, as he could have prevented the accident by braking or evasive steering movement if he had been paying attention. Despite the fact that the consequences could have been more serious in the case of a larger model, the Model 3 escaped the incident cheaply: its bumper and windshield were only minimally damaged.

Tesla has received a lot of criticism for promoting Autopilot and the FSD system in a misleading way, with contradictions, but at the same time, the American brand cannot fail to emphasize, in accordance with the current legislation, that the driver of the vehicle must remain alert and hold the steering wheel during its use. , to be able to intervene if necessary – which could happen at any time, as the technology is still in its infancy.
