Tesla recalls 27,000 Cybertrucks due to camera problems. This is the fifth call so far this year.

Due to its design, the Tesla Cybertruck It does not have great rear visibility: its rear window is tiny. And if the box curtain is closed, it is impossible to see anything directly. The electric pick-up uses a digital rearview mirror to solve this, which shows the image captured by the rear camera.

After the latest software update, this camera and digital rearview mirror are failing and has forced the brand to carry out a call for review. And now there are five. It affects virtually all Cybertrucks sold to date, more than 27,000 units.

The digital rearview mirror does not turn on when engaging reverse gear

The Tesla Cybertruck It began to be delivered in November of last year. Since then it has been seen affected by five withdrawals. In June it even turned two and both of them also forced customers to take it to the workshop: a failure in its enormous windshield wiper and a defect in a molding of the box. The most serious defect was detected in April, the accelerator pedal could get stuck when it caught on the mat.

This time they will not have to go to the workshop: the fault can be solved with a remote software update.

As stated in the order of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA for its acronym in English), this new recall affects all Cybertrucks manufactured between November 13 and September 14, 2024. In total there are 27,185 models, all delivered until that date.

The new problem affecting the Cybertruck is due to a delay in the interior mirror image: when engaging reverse gear it can take up to eight seconds in showing it. US security regulations require that this image be displayed within a maximum of two seconds.

It is estimated that this failure could be a potential danger for pedestrians. Even more so with the Cybertruck, a mass that can reach up to three tons and with ridged panels that do not deform. According to NHTSA, up to 45 customers have reported or complained about this rearview mirror error to Tesla technical service. No injuries or accidents have been reported for this reason.

The defect has been detected with software 2024.32.5.2: the latest available from the brand and which includes new features for the automatic lane change of Autopilot FSD or autonomous parking, among others. Nevertheless, The update will be made to all Cybertruck units manufactured until September 14, whether they have updated to this version or not. There is no indication that it affects other Tesla models.

As usual, this new update will be completely free for customers. Tesla will notify this recall by postal mail, as required by regulations, although they may request information from the firm’s website or app.

“I just want it to work well.” He bought a Tesla Cybertruck for 90,000 euros six months ago. It has been eight visits to the workshop and they return it just as broken

Due to aerodynamics or design, there are electric cars that even do without the rear window, as is the case of the Polestar 4, which relies everything on the digital rearview mirror and the rear camera. Although this technology can be useful when visibility is reduced, due to weather conditions, low light, dirt or due to the rear occupants themselves, it always depends on the system working correctly. And that the camera is not damaged or vandalized.
