Tesla sued over ‘Blade Runner 2049’ allusions in robot taxi presentation

Billionaire Elon Musk’s desire to refer to the movie “Blade Runner 2049” at the recent presentation of his company Tesla’s robot taxi has led to legal complications.

Production company Alcon Entertainment filed a four-count lawsuit on Monday, three of which allege copyright infringement and one for misrepresentation, against Tesla, Musk and Warner Bros., on whose property the presentation took place.

The sequel to 2017’s The Exterminator depicts a dystopian future marked by disaster and social collapse, featuring autonomous vehicles with artificial intelligence. During the presentation, Musk praised the film, but pointed out that it does not reflect the future he wants.

The painting displayed at the event showed a person in a long coat facing a sandstorm and a city under an orange sky. Alcon claims that the image was designed to allude to similar scenes from their film, for which they did not give permission.

According to Alcon, Tesla requested permission to use the image hours before the event. The company has already refused, but Musk’s presentation still contained a similar image generated by artificial intelligence tools.

Alcon holds the copyright for the film, while Warner Bros. was the distributor of “Blade Runner 2049.”

In the lawsuit, Alcon claims it does not want to be associated with Musk or his companies, citing his “highly politicized, capricious and arbitrary behavior, which sometimes veers into hate speech.”

They believe that this unauthorized connection is harmful to their business, and are therefore seeking financial compensation.

Tesla has so far not publicly commented on the lawsuit.

At the presentation, Musk presented a self-driving electric vehicle designed to transport passengers without a human driver. Tesla aims to start production in 2026, and the car is expected to cost less than $30,000. Musk has been promising self-driving cars for more than eight years.
