A charging box, the small power house that controls fast charging stations. Tesla’s latest Supercharger V4 charging cabinets now offer a massive 500kW charging capacity.
Opponents of electric driving often mention the charging time of the battery as an obstacle. And yes, charging is not yet as fast as refueling, but the jumps in loading capacity are enormous. For example, Tesla started its Supercharger network in 2012 with chargers that delivered 90kW of power, enough for 80 percent in half an hour with a modest battery. Now Tesla has its latest Supercharger V4 charging cabinets revealedwith power of 500kW for cars and 1200kW for the Tesla Semi truck. Even such a large truck with a 900 kWh battery would be more than 80 percent full in half an hour.
The charging cabinet will be connected to existing Supercharger charging stations from 2025, so that the larger charging capacity can be rolled out quickly. Unfortunately, you do not yet benefit from this with Teslas that we have here in Europe: the ‘S3XY’ models have a maximum charging capacity of 250kW, which is already used with the current V3 charging cabinets. They can charge up to 320 kilometers in 15 minutes: that’s one coffee break on the way to Paris, to name just one thing.
Cybertruck can charge faster
The Cybertruck does benefit from V4 Supercharger and can be charged 30 percent faster. Tesla competitors already offer charging stations with 400 kW of power, where the Cybertruck could charge more than 1,600 kilometers per hour: 400 kilometers in fifteen minutes. This is under optimal conditions, because the charging cabinet controls multiple charging stations each.
The Supercharger V4 box will soon control eight poles simultaneously: twice as many as the V3. According to Tesla, this ensures that the Supercharger network can be provided with the higher charging speed twice as quickly: fewer cabinets need to be installed. In addition, there are already V4 charging stations in many places, which are already suitable for the greater capacity of these cabinets. It is not yet clear where and when exactly the faster Superchargers will be available in 2025.
