There are times when fixing things yourself is much better. Not only because of the satisfaction of leaving something like new with your own hands, but because of how much you can fix if you have a little skill.
The owner of a Tesla Cybertuck He has proven it with his electric pick-up. Fixing a dent (yes, even though Elon Musk says it’s indestructible) in the driver’s door of a Tesla would have cost him a fortune, but he decided to do it on his own and it was much cheaper.
It doesn’t always work out, but when it works it’s very rewarding.
Taking the car to an official workshop always usually costs an arm and a leg. Whatever the model and whatever the brand, the after-sales service rates that manufacturers have are expensive, both for labor and for the parts needed for repair or simply maintenance. If we talk about certain cars and certain brands, prices can still be higher.
It is the case of Teslaespecially if it is the Tesla Cybertruck, the American brand’s fully electric pick-up that has a stainless steel body and an unconventional design. That is why fixing any dent or scratch on its bodywork, no matter how small, is a big deal, unless you are looking for a life outside of official service.
That’s what the owner of a Cybertruck has done, the youtuber Detroit Tesla. A few weeks ago, he went to the official Tesla service in Southfield, Michigan (United States) with the intention of fixing a small dent in the driver’s door of his pick-up.
According to what he says in a video he uploaded to YouTube, he asked budget and the workshop manager told him that the door panel he needs to fix has a price of 828 dollars (a little more than 800 euros at the current exchange rate) and that Tesla can order it to be fixed at the official service or to have it fixed himself.
Changing it seems pretty easy, Detroit Tesla says it would probably take an hour to do so it would cost about $150 more at Tesla. The problem is that after you order the part and install it, Tesla says you have to “blend” the color of the panel to match the body panels around it.
In a car with a painted body, this process makes sense because its color changes over time and a new panel would have a different tone, so this process is carried out so that the piece that is painted does not draw so much attention. It has just been painted. However, the body of the Tesla Cybertruck is not painted: it is made of stainless steel.
Still, Tesla says it has to do the mixing process because the new panel would shine much brighter than the rest of the panels. With this work, repairing the door of Detroit Tesla’s Tesla Cybertruck would cost about $3,000, just over 2,900 euros at the exchange rate.
With that budget, Detroit Tesla decided to make a living and fix the door on his own, with the help of a friend. The only thing they needed was a suction cup that It cost them 25 dollars (less than 25 euros) to remove dents from the bodywork.
The first attempts don’t go very well, probably because the body is wet, so they decide to use a heat cannon that they had stored in the garage and try again with the suction cup, which this time hooks perfectly and removes the dent. The result is impeccable and, logically, without the need to mix colors because the body panel has not been replaced with a new one.
