Tesla will launch a six-seater variant of the Model Y in China starting in late 2025 in a bid to face competition in the Chinese market.
Tesla will launch a six-seat variant of the Model Y in China starting in late 2025, according to Reuters.
The American company made this decision, regarding the Model Y, being convinced that the car started to age.
Tesla’s Model Y was launched in 2020
Tesla has asked suppliers to prepare for a significant increase in Model Y production at the Shanghai plant, although no further details are known about that potential expansion.
The Shanghai plant has already seen a 6 percent increase in Model 3 deliveries in the first six months of the year, thanks to the launch of a facelifted version last year.
For now, Tesla is waiting for approval to expand the factory on 70 hectares of agricultural land.
The Model Y, launched in 2020 and now undergoing a reinvention called “Juniper”, will initially have five seats and will be launched in the first part of 2025, later than originally planned.
The new six-seater appears to be motivated by competition from China, where companies such as Nio and Zeekr have introduced similar, more spacious models at lower prices.
The Model Y is China’s best-selling vehicle across all engine types, with sales of 207,800 units in the first six months of the year.
