Teslas are the deadliest, but Tesla isn’t stupid

They examined which brands are responsible for the most fatal accidents in the United States. Based on the data for models between 2018 and 2022 and accidents between 2017 and 2022, Tesla’s hay is the worst.

The iSeeCars according to his study, in the case of Tesla, the number of fatal accidents per one billion miles, i.e. 1.6 billion kilometers, is 5.6, but not far behind, Kia came in second place with a value of 5.5. Buick is at the bottom of the podium with 4.8, followed by Dodge (4.4) and Hyundai (3.9). The average value is 2.8, which means that Tesla accidents are twice as deadly compared to the average.

Accident statistics related to each model were also analyzed. Tesla didn’t fare well either, with the Model Y having 10.6 fatal incidents per billion miles, nearly five times the SUV average, and the sixth-worst overall. Only the Hyundai Venue, Corvette, Mitsubishi Mirage, Porsche 911 and hybrid Honda CR-V finished ahead of it. The Model S’s value of 5.8 is also twice the average.

However, it is important to point out that it is not a question of Tesla not producing safe cars, regardless of the fact that autonomous and semi-autonomous systems still leave something to be desired. The reason for the shockingly high accident rate is much more to be found in how people drive Teslas.

“Most of these vehicles have received excellent safety ratings and have performed well in IIHS and NHTSA crash tests, so there is no design flaw behind them. The vehicles on the list likely reflect a combination of driver behavior and driving conditions that result in an increase in accidents and fatalities,” explained Karl Brauer, iSeeCars Executive Analyst.

“Certainly size, weight and height play a role in how well a vehicle can protect its occupants in a crash. At the same time, the greatest contribution to the safety of passengers is the avoidance of collisions, in which the driver’s behavior is the most decisive factor.”

“A focused, alert driver who drives legally, at a carefully chosen speed, without the influence of drugs or alcohol, is most likely to get to his destination safely, regardless of the car he’s in,” he added.
