Test Mitsubishi ASX (2024) – these 2 tricks look familiar to Renault Captur drivers

The Mitsubishi ASX is based on the Renault Captur. So it’s a copy, but you do benefit from at least two features that make driving the Mitsubishi ASX a lot more pleasant.

That has everything to do with the car it is based on, the Renault Captur. It had been available since 2019 and was therefore in urgent need of a facelift. Mitsubishi had to follow suit, because the Mitsubishi ASX rolls off the production line in the same Spanish factory. Just like with the Captur, the exterior changes are quite drastic. The grille is now rectangular and narrower and the daytime running lights have been given their own place in the bumper.

Like two drops of water

Especially on the inside, the Mitsubishi ASX looks exactly like the Renault Captur. We still see the portrait screen, but the three dials below it have disappeared. They make way for other physical buttons, so you can still control the air conditioning without having to start a quest on the big screen. Google is your best friend, because the Mitsubishi ASX works with Google Play, Google Maps and Google’s voice assistant.

Handy: sliding rear seat

The biggest trick that the Mitsubishi ASX inherited from the Captur is its sliding rear seat. Adults have sufficient freedom of movement not to tire each other with unpleasant odors or unwanted touches, even in the back. You also have 332 liters of luggage space. If you slide the bench forward 16 centimeters, another 69 liters will be added and you will have 401 liters.

The second trick that the Mitsubishi ASX borrowed from the Captur is the button that allows you to disable overzealous warning systems. You set your personal preferences once. When you start the car, the systems are mandatory, but with one push of a button you can switch to your own preferences and you will no longer be bothered by unwanted beeps.

We don’t like this as much

What we don’t like so much is the complicated hybrid system (143 hp) that we also know from the Captur. It consists of a petrol engine and two electric motors. You always start with the small electric motor. The large electric motor helps to keep driving electrically for as long as possible. This motor is linked to two gears. Then the 94 hp petrol engine comes into play, with four gears. A total of 14 combinations are possible!

We are already dizzy and the Mitsubishi ASX also finds it all overwhelming. The engines do not always work well together. At unexpected moments (for example when descending a mountain), the petrol engine kicks in and howls like a notorious stepless CVT transmission.

Mitsubishi ASX consumption

The fine chassis and the neat sound insulation improve our mood, but on the dramatically bad roads around Rome we do hear some rattles in the interior. If you do your best, you can come pretty close to the EU consumption of 1 in 21.3.
