Test | OnePlus 13 phone – Unlucky number to win?

OnePlus 13 may sound suspicious for its name. The device is by no means that, but it is very competent as a phone, although it is anything but cheap.

In Western culture, there are many explanations for why the number 13 is an unlucky number. Some of the reasons are related to Christian tradition, others to numerology, and still others to Viking legends. However, none of these superstitious grounds have any meaning for OnePlussa, because in Chinese culture the unlucky number is the number 4, which sounds like death. That’s why the Chinese manufacturer has no reason to hide its enthusiasm when the new OnePlus 13 is finally released – without bowing to anyone.

There is currently a special split in the smartphone race. Elsewhere, development dollars, yen, won and yuan are directed to phone models with folding screens, which, thanks to the opening structure, hide a screen almost the size of a tablet device inside. In this field, the large size of the screen and the new possibilities it offers are the focus of attention

On the other hand, millions are directed to squeeze a diamond out of a traditional tile-shaped phone with a solid body, where an exceptionally large battery, the most powerful processor on the market and an exceptionally large amount of memory are crammed into a pocket size. And all this because the industry’s hottest buzzword – artificial intelligence – could perhaps soon be unleashed to do the most imaginative work on behalf of its user.

Running language models and machine learning algorithms locally inside a small computer that fits in your pocket is an effort that makes top phones of just a couple of years ago cough in their lungs. For example, Apple has had to limit its Apple Intelligence functionality outside of its new 16 models to only the 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max phones, because the other models simply did not have enough RAM to run the AI models. OnePlus should not have this problem, because both the 12 model from a year ago and the new OnePlus 13 have either 12 or 16 gigabytes of central memory.

Unlike the predecessor model 12, the sales package no longer includes a charging device at all. The traditional thick, sturdy and understated red charging cable is included, but in particular it still uses a USB-A connector at the end of the charger. Due to the widespread use of the USB-C connector, one might have assumed that there would already be a reason to use a C connector at both ends of the cable.

The OnePlus 13 was already presented earlier in the fall of 2024 in China, but the international release and the start of sales finally took place only on January 7, 2025. We received the phone for testing a couple of weeks before the official release, so the experiences in this article are based on about two weeks of use, personal tests and performance measurements.
