Now that there are more and more electric sports cars, we were looking forward to our test drive with the updated Porsche 911 Carrera. Is its time really up or has the Porsche 911 only become more attractive?
The biggest change concerns the GTS T-Hybrid. We already see enthusiasts showing slight vomiting tendencies, because indeed: for the first time in its long history, the Porsche 911 (992-2) is available as a hybrid. It produces a Porsche-worthy 541 hp, but because we sympathize with this group of people, we leave the hybrid version for what it is and get behind the wheel of the Porsche 911 Carrera, without hybrid technology.
More power
There’s no need to be embarrassed with the entry-level 911. The 3.0-liter biturbo six-cylinder boxer engine has become even more powerful and now produces 394 hp. This is due to new turbos (from the previous GTS) and the intercooler from the 911 Turbo of the pre-facelift model. At the same time, CO2 emissions fell, but that will be a concern for buyers bockwurst being.
The new Porsche 911 Carrera Coupé accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.1 seconds. The convertible we drove takes 4.3 seconds, but not that we noticed this difference at all. The top speed remains below the magical limit of 300 km/h: 294 km/h for the coupe and 291 km/h for the convertible.
Easy as a lamb
In normal driving mode, the 911 is as gentle as a lamb. Really, your grandma will drive away with it laughing. You definitely notice that you are driving something special, because your butt is almost on the asphalt. Behind your head the boxer engine coughs a bit, but above all it keeps quiet. The 911 drives like an average sporty middle class car. The accelerator pedal is easy to operate and at a speed of about 110 km/h the boxer engine runs at a low 2000 rpm.
The world suddenly looks very different when you switch on sports mode. If only because the sports exhaust is also activated. An extra of just 2753 euros, but even if you have to put aside your hard-earned money for a holiday to a tropical island, do it. The sound coming from both exhaust pipes is dark and raw and will give any car enthusiast goosebumps. Suddenly you’re in a car that scares the hell out of your grandma.
A bit bolder
In Sport Plus it all becomes a bit more brutal, because then comes launch control and the shift paths of the 8-speed automatic transmission are tailored to the motorsport in which Porsche is active. We now think we would rather drive a Carrera GT than a sporty middle class car.
Middle throttle, popping exhausts, a rock-solid chassis; Whatever you think of it, you will get it. The automatic transmission drops down a few gears and even at a constant speed of 100 km/h, the eighth gear is not engaged, which keeps the revs high and the engine sounds raw. You feel the driving forces in the steering wheel and the accelerator pedal, the steering is razor-sharp and you realize once again how special the 911 is. This car is at a lonely height.
Test Porsche 911 (2024) conclusion
The Porsche 911 has lost none of its appeal. In fact, the arrival of the electric sports car makes you appreciate even more how great the 911 drives and how special it is. Porsche has indicated that the 911 will be the very last model to be electrified. We secretly hope that time never comes.
