Finally we were able to drive the new Volvo EX90, a large electric 7-seater SUV. That went well, but Volvo still has to do some work.
Already sent on November 9, 2022 Volvo the press release of its new electric 7-seater SUV to the world. Production started last June, later than intended. Volvo ran into software problems. The hassle was such that customers had to wait longer for their ordered Volvo EX90.
We find few things more boring than software, so enough about that: the Volvo EX90 is here. The copies for Europe do not come off the production line in Sweden or China, but in Charleston, America. The XXL format is also more appropriate here. But Volvo has still managed to give the EX90 a quiet and stylish design. No nonsense, but rather modest and chic. We love it and we think the average EX90 buyer does too.
Volvo EX90 is peace itself
This tranquility is reflected in the interior. Here too, no frivolities such as ventilation grilles that look like propellers, a voice assistant with a bubble-blowing face on the dashboard or three screens that merge into each other as if you were watching one wide-screen television. Instead, a neat vertical central screen and a relatively small, but nevertheless clearly readable instrument cluster, of course also digital.
Our weekly newsletter is the ‘vrijmibo’ among newsletters and is a pleasure to read.
A big hug to the Volvo seat makers. The seats of the Volvo EX90 are wonderful. They offer a lot of comfort, good support and have plenty of different positions. Whatever your stature and height, everyone can find a comfortable sitting position.
We will continue to put reward stickers on reports, because we are also very pleased with how quiet the Volvo EX90 is. It was to be expected that you hardly hear both electric motors (one at the front, one at the rear, so AWD) of the 517 hp Twin Motor Performance with which we drive. But the fact that tire and wind noise are also not audible is a pleasant surprise. Especially because our test sample is standing on large 22-inch slippers with wide rubber.
Great travel car
We listen carefully and the only thing we hear on the highway is the soft blowing of the air conditioning. In any case, the Volvo EX90 is a great travel car. With the double air suspension (an option for 2705 euros on the Plus and Ultra) you hardly notice what is happening under the car. As if there is a thin layer of air between the wheels and the asphalt, the largest Volvo of the moment drives so smoothly and undisturbed. At higher speeds, the body lowers slightly for even better stability.
The space in the back seat is good. Just like in the front, you sit very comfortably here. You shouldn’t imagine too much about the space in the third row of seats. The Nio EL8 is more spacious here. On the other hand, with all seven seats in use you can still carry 310 liters of luggage – the Nio only fits 265 liters with all six seats in use.
You don’t have to explain to Volvo how to build a great (travel) car. But the electronics are a different story, even after the delayed production start that gave Volvo time to resolve certain issues. Our test sample sometimes did not recognize the phone that we could use as a key. As a result, the EX90 did not drive any further and we still had to look for the key card.
Furthermore, the car refused to lock as soon as we walked away with the key card. Walking back and pushing one of the door handles was the solution. But of course you don’t feel like doing that at all. Although you can get your daily steps in this way.
Test Volvo EX90 conclusion
With the Volvo EX90, Volvo is showing off its calling card, but not yet in terms of electronics. Other than that, we are impressed. It drives excellently, looks good, and is spacious and beautifully finished. The good news is that the minor imperfections have probably already been resolved with software updates.
