Tested Siri with ChatGPT in iOS 18.2. You can communicate in Russian, what else useful have you added?

The first beta version of iOS 18.2 for developers was recently released.

This version adds the second wave of Apple Intelligence features for iPhone. The most significant innovation was the integration of ChatGPT (version OpenAI GPT-4o) to the operating system.

Now the chatbot complements Siri and helps users find answers to all their questions.

We have already tested the new product and share our impressions.

What devices is Apple Intelligence available on?

Apple Intelligence is supported on iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, all iPhone 16 models, and iPad and Mac with the M1 chip and later.

This limitation is due to the fact that devices must have at least 8 GB of RAM. Apple itself previously reported this.

iPhone requires at least 4 GB of free space.

Important: To run AI, you need to translate the iOS and Siri language to English. There is no need to change the region.

To change the iOS language you need to go to Settings -> General -> Language and Region.

To change the Siri language, you need to go to Settings -> Apple Intelligence and Siri -> Language.

How to enable Apple Intelligence and ChatGPT

Access to the innovation is provided on a first-come, first-served basis. Apple usually provided access fairly quickly, the wait was less than an hour.

To activate AI, you need to go to Settings -> Apple Intelligence and Siri and turn on the corresponding toggle switch. After changing the language, look for the ChatGPT item in the same menu, go to it and enable it.

If you want the chatbot to store all your communications with it, you need to log in to your OpenAI account via a foreign IP address. If you do not want to do this, then a foreign IP is not required. ChatGPT in iOS 18.2 works in Russia without restrictions.

What about data security?

As a user, you have full control over when ChatGPT is used and what features it will have access to. The chatbot is turned off by default, so you’ll need to turn it on to use it with Siri, Writing Tools, and Visual Intelligence.

If your request does not specifically request access to ChatGPT, but analysis of your request indicates that there may be other useful results for your request, Siri will ask if you want to use ChatGPT. This can be disabled in the settings, while maintaining the direct question option.

The data you send depends on whether you have a ChatGPT account linked or not. If you do not enter it, the only data sent will be the request itself and any files attached to it. Apple account information is not shared and your IP address is masked. OpenAI will not be able to use the data to train its model; however, your location is sent to the company to help prevent fraud.

Impressions of ChatGPT in iOS 18.2

The chatbot is deeply integrated into the operating system. It is linked to many Apple Intelligence features. For example, it can help you improve/write text and generate images.

ChatGPT in iOS 18.2 works in Russia without any restrictions.

However, it is not yet possible to communicate with the chatbot in Russian by voice. Siri with AI only understands English speech. In the future, the company will add support for other languages, but there is no information about the timing of the integration of Russian.

However, you can chat with ChatGPT in Russian. To do this, double-tap the bottom of the screen to open the text field for entering a request for Siri.

To go straight to ChatGPT, you need to start the message with “ChatGPT your request.” For example, “ChatGPT tell us about the working principle of quantum mechanics.”

In response to your request, the chatbot will provide the result in Russian.

It can be accessed similarly in writing applications where Apple Intelligence is available. For example, in Notes. Tap on the AI icon at the bottom of the screen or select Writing Tools in the context menu, click on Compose at the bottom and write your request.

In this case, you can ask the bot to write text for you or highlight a specific fragment of it and then improve it by asking ChatGPT.

It takes from 2 to 10 seconds to process each request. It all depends on the context.

Here are some examples of work:

Additionally, ChatGPT can be asked to generate an image. Just write the request you need, and the chatbot will do it (it works every other time).

Here are a couple of examples:

I also note that Siri with ChatGPT, with active requests, greatly affects the operating time of the iPhone. So, after 10 minutes of communication, my iPhone 15 Pro gets very hot and loses one percent of its charge every 3-5 minutes.

Most likely, in future updates everything will work much better. The integration is still crude and not fully optimized.

There are bugs too. Thus, Siri cannot always be launched by pressing a button or tapping at the bottom of the screen. And in Telegram, gestures stop working after a while. In this case, pressing the back button helps if you have some kind of chat or channel open. Or you can simply restart the messenger. Probably, in the case of Telegram, the situation will be corrected by an update after the release of iOS 18.1 this coming Monday.

Good update, but needs improvement

As I said above, the integration is still raw. Yes, everything works, but bugs and strong heating of the device are possible. In any case, this is true for the iPhone 15 Pro.

We are waiting for new versions of iOS 18.2.
