That damned Seine again. The purity of the water causes problems for the organizers even at the Paralympics – Other sports

The organizers of the Paralympic Games in Paris have decided to postpone the triathlon race to Monday due to the decrease in water quality in the Seine River. The competition was originally supposed to take place on Sunday, September 1.

After the Olympic Games, there are also problems with swimming in the Seine River during the Paralympic Games.

The reduced water quality should have occurred as a result of heavy rains. The organizers already faced the same problem during the 2024 Olympics, when they had to postpone the men’s triathlon race and cancel several training sessions in the Seine.

“The latest tests have shown a decline in water quality that has occurred in connection with the heavy rains of the past two days. As a result, there is not enough water at the venue of the race and it exceeds the limit set by the World Triathlon,” Reuters quoted the organizers as saying.

Organizers initially moved the 11 paratriathlon medal events to September 1 due to weather concerns, with September 2 and 3 set aside as fallback days.

The cleanliness of the Seine was one of the big themes of the Paris Olympics. The organizers have invested 1.4 billion euros in its cleaning as part of an ambitious plan to enable public swimming in the river.

Due to the higher concentration of E.coli bacteria after the rains, trainings in the river were canceled during the Olympics, and the triathletes’ races were postponed by a day.

Some swimmers complained of health problems after the races in the Seine, but it is not clear whether their condition was directly related to the water in the river.
