Health. In Sweden, smoking has decreased steadily for a long time, but still 5.4 percent of the population smokes daily and the differences between different groups are large. New statistics also show that the use of e-cigarettes and nicotine snuff is increasing and is most common among young people aged 16–29.
The statistics that the Public Health Authority is now presenting come from this year’s national public health survey Health on equal terms, which has been sent out to people aged 16 and over since 2004.
In Sweden, daily smoking has decreased steadily over several decades. The reduction coincides with various broad tobacco prevention efforts, including bans on tobacco advertising, tax regulation, age limits and smoke-free environments outside and inside.
In 2024, 5.4 percent of the population aged 16–84 report that they smoke tobacco daily. Large differences are still visible in the population based on factors such as education, income and employment. Among people with pre-secondary education, for example, almost 11 percent smoke daily, compared to about 3 percent among people with post-secondary education.
The use of e-cigarettes and nicotine snuff is increasing in the population, and is most common among children and young people aged 16–29. About 20 percent in this age group state that they use nicotine snuff daily or occasionally. Just over 10 percent of the same age group use e-cigarettes daily or occasionally.
