That’s it, the price of diesel is starting to rise again

After a period of decline, the price of diesel is rising again during this back-to-school period. We explain everything to you!

Filling up your car is rarely an enjoyable activity, especially given the price of petrol and diesel.

Diesel on the rise

Fortunately, France had known a little lull this summer during the school holidays, with prices falling across the country. This was very good news, which was obviously very much appreciated by motorists, who were then able to better enjoy their summer getaways. But now, for a few days now, the price of diesel in France has been rising slightly after several weeks of falling, according to the most recent data from the Ministry of Ecological Transition. Indeed, this fuel increased by 0.2 cents on average across the country between the end of August and the beginning of September. The average price now stands at 1.6117 euros per litremarking a first rebound after nearly two months of continuous decline. Since the beginning of July, the price of diesel in France had gradually decreased, going from 1.7253 euros per liter at the beginning of the summer to 1.6093 euros at the end of August. Enough to ease the burden on drivers’ wallets!

Several reasons for this trend

But what is the reason for this increase? In fact, several factors can explain these fluctuations in diesel prices. On the one hand, the price of a barrel of crude oil on international markets plays a key role. Geopolitical tensions, disruptions in supply chains, or even decisions by OPEC (Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries) can directly influence prices at the pump. Furthermore, it should be remembered that during the summer, some major retailers tried to limit the impact of increases by offering fuel operations at cost price. These initiatives allowed some motorists to take advantage of particularly attractive rates, with prices sometimes flirting with €1.50/L. However, these temporary operations cannot sustainably slow down a structural increase linked to international markets. The question now is whether this recent increase is only a temporary surge or whether it marks the beginning of a new upward trend for the months to come.

Let’s hope that this is not the case, and that diesel prices will remain at least at this level…
