That’s why you should never throw away tealights in the metal recycling

Sorting waste and garbage correctly is important for nature, but it can be complicated. News24 has previously pointed out that you must not throw flowers in the food waste and also reported on how to sort cardboard packaging where the plastic cork is stuck.

How to dispose of tealights the right way

Many people sort tealights together with other metal such as cans and tin lids. But since 2015, tea lights are not counted as packaging and therefore should not be sorted as metal.

It is also important to remove the wick holder at the bottom of the container. This is because it is made of iron while the rest of the cup is made of aluminum and then it will be sorted as steel. This makes the whole recycling in vain because the aluminum has a lower melting point than iron and then burns up. If you remove the wick holder, the cup will be sorted as aluminum and can be reused, reports Söderköping municipality.

To sort the tealights correctly, you must take them to the municipality’s recycling center and sort them like other scrap metal, reports Advice and Opinion.
