While The Simpsons continues to predict our future, fans of the series were able to discover the first episode of the 36th season, broadcast this Sunday, September 29, 2024. A somewhat special episode, notably because it was massively teased by the series. But what is this first episode, called “Bart’s Birthday“, was it so important to the continuity of the series? Although the first episodes of the season usually set the tone, this episode mostly felt like a conclusion.
Comment The Simpsons could it end after so many seasons and twists and turns? Well “Bart’s Birthday” has the answer. A tribute to the history and legacy of the series, which opens with Conan O’Brien determined to organize a major event to celebrate the end of the series. Celebrities and former characters are therefore invited, even if the conclusion of the story arcs of many characters is imagined. So :
- Principal Skinner retires to become new principal of Sacramento school when Willie will be his roommate;
- Mr Burns falls into a pit of acid and dies, his fortune is distributed among all the employees;
- Kirk Van Houten signs with a record company and therefore manages to finance Milhouse’s eye surgery so that he no longer has to wear glasses.
- Nelson’s father returns;
- Krusty broadcasts his latest show with his entire clique;
- Chief Wiggum is transferred to the Chicago Police Department;
- The real Seymour Skinner returns to live with his mother;
- Nef married Ruth Powers;
- Moe closes the bar;
- The infamous tire fire is out;
- Homer and Marge undergo couples therapy and decide to open a new page in their lives, without trauma this time;
- Maggie speaks her first word;
- Lisa wins the “Junior Juliard Jazz” and “MacArthur Under 18 Genius” scholarships.
What about Bart in this story? To blow out his candles, the Simpsons’ eldest son surrounded himself with recurring characters as rarely seen. We then discover a jumble of different endings, with Bart refusing to let his life change and the situations of his loved ones evolve. The boy struggles to push back this finality, to the point of pushing his father to strangle him. While the series was forced to remove this gimmick yet popular, it is back, as if to close the loop.
That’s when Bart realizes that it’s actually his 10th birthday. And surprise, nothing changes. The Simpsons will continue to predict the future, make us laugh and smile, and that for a few more years. It is not with this first episode of season 36 that the series will be closed, especially since other episodes are on the way. The Simpsons returns this Sunday with “The Yellow Lotus“, in which “The Simpsons Near Death While Vacationing at an Upscale Resort” the synopsis tells us. Tahiti Bob will be back.
