AGENDA – What will 2025 look like? With Donald Trump returning to power in January, the new year does not seem to be starting off under the best auspices. But let’s not judge the next twelve months too quickly. Some deadlines may even make you smile.
• January 6: a “big 8 p.m. news” on BFMTV
Bought in July by billionaire Rodolphe Saadé, BFMTV launches its 8 p.m. show, entrusted to Maxime Switek. This program should last two hours and combine reports, interviews and expert analyses, the objective being “to move away from confrontational formats to favor a dispassionate, even benevolent, approach to information”according to The World who revealed the information in December.
• January 7: the attack on “Charlie Hebdo”, ten years already
Ten years later, a disastrous date which remains in the memories: on January 7, 2015, twelve people lost their lives in the terrorist attack on the editorial staff of Charlie Hebdo by the brothers Chérif and Saïd Kouachi. The satirical weekly had been the target of jihadist threats since the publication of caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad in 2006. Among the victims, eight members of the editorial staff: the cartoonists Cabu, Charb, Honoré, Tignous and Wolinski, the psychiatrist and psychoanalyst Elsa Cayat, the economist Bernard Maris and the proofreader Mustapha Ourrad.
The terrorists also took the lives of Franck Brinsolaro, police officer responsible for protecting Charb, Frédéric Boisseau, maintenance agent who was working that day in the newspaper’s premises, and Michel Renaud, former chief of staff to the mayor of Clermont. -Ferrand, guest of the editorial conference. While leaving Charlie Hebdo headquarters, they killed Ahmed Merabet, a police officer, in the street.
The next day, January 8, Amedy Coulibaly, accomplice of the Kouachi brothers, shot dead Clarissa Jean-Philippe, municipal police officer in Montrouge, in the middle of the street, before a hostage-taking at the Hyper Cacher at the Porte de Vincennes on January 9, killing four people who were shopping before the start of Shabbat: Yohan Cohen, student and store employee, Philippe Braham, sales executive, François-Michel Saada, retired executive, and Yoav Hattab, student. Amedy Coulibaly is killed in the police assault which, late in the afternoon, frees the hostages held in the store. The Kouachi brothers were shot dead a few minutes earlier by the GIGN, while they had taken refuge in a printing works in Dammartin-en-Goële.
• January 17: 50 years ago, the Veil law, a big step for women’s rights
The law making abortion legal, carried by Simone Veil, was adopted on January 17, 1975. From that moment on, every French woman was able, within ten weeks, to have a voluntary termination of pregnancy. A major advance in women’s control over their bodies and in terms of public health which was enshrined in the Constitution in 2024.
• January 20: Donald Trump’s comeback to the White House
He was waiting for it so much. January 20 marks the official return of Donald Trump to the White House. It will thus pass from “president-elect” to president in office. It was during this « Inauguration day »that the president and his vice-president take the oath. Donald Trump, in public on the steps of the Capitol, will read a text provided for by the Constitution and swear on the Bible with his left hand. A passage which is not obligatory.
• February 10: the attack on the Nice basilica before the courts
Nadine Devillers and Simone Barreto Silva, two faithful, and Vincent Loquès, sacristan of the basilica, were killed on Thursday October 29, 2020 inside the Notre-Dame-de-l’Assomption church in Nice during a Islamist terrorist knife attack. The suspect, a young Tunisian recently arrived in Europe, was seriously injured by municipal police before being arrested in the basilica. His trial will begin on February 10, until the end of the month.
• February 14: Youtube is 20 years old
This is an anniversary that will not make us any younger. The YouTube platform celebrates its 20th anniversary on Valentine’s Day. It was created in February 2005 by Steve Chen, Chad Hurley and Jawed Karim, three former PayPal employees. YouTube was purchased by Google in October 2006 for $1.65 billion.
• February 23: Germany at the polls
After the collapse of his coalition and a lost vote of confidence on December 16, social-democratic Chancellor Olaf Scholz announced the holding of early elections to break the political impasse in which Germany finds itself. The conservatives are the big favorites.
• February 28: end of C8 and NRJ12 on TNT
The authorization of C8 and NRJ12 to broadcast on TNT is expiring. Arcom has decided not to renew their frequencies. C8 had been the subject of multiple fines and calls to order for Cyril Hanouna’s show while NRJ12 continues rebroadcasts of series without original programs. Two new channels will arrive on TNT.
• February 28 : Bye bye Cyndi Lauper
Aged 71, Cyndi Lauper has decided to say goodbye to the stage. The singer gives a final tour called « Girls Just Wanna Have Fun Farewell Tour » which began on October 18, 2024 at the Bell Center in Montreal and will pass through the Accor Arena before ending in Japan a few weeks later.
• March 24: Depardieu faces justice
Gérard Depardieu finally has a meeting with justice, after having obtained the postponement of his trial on October 28. The trial of the 75-year-old actor for sexual assault on two women during the filming of Green shutters should last two days. Tried in criminal court, he faces up to five years of imprisonment and a fine of 75,000 euros, without aggravating circumstances.
• April 2: welcome to the land of blocks
It will be a great day for fans of Minecraft : that of the release in France of the film adapted from the best-selling video game in the world. Jason Momoa (Aquaman, Game of Thrones) et Jack Black (Tenacious D, King Kong) play the main roles in this youth adventure film.
• April 13: Osaka hosts the World Expo
The 2025 World Expo opens in Osaka (Japan) on the theme “Design the society of the future, imagine our life of tomorrow”. This is the third time that the archipelago has been entrusted with the organization of a Universal Exhibition. It must last six months, until October 13, 2025.
• April 27: first saint of the 21st century
He will become the first saint of the 21st century. Died in 2006 by a devastating leukemia at the age of 15, Carlo Acutis will be canonized on April 27, 2025. Considered to be at the origin of two miracles, the Italian is already the object of veneration and has become in a few years an essential figure in catechesis among young Catholics. Today, the body of the Italian teenager is on display in Assisi.
• April 29: anniversary of women’s right to vote
It’s been 80 years since French women voted for the first time. “Women are voters and eligible under the same conditions as men”: Thanks to this order signed on April 21, 1944, General de Gaulle made the right to vote truly universal. And it was a year later, on April 29, 1945, that women were able to vote for the first time, during the municipal elections.
• June 15: start of the brand new FIFA Club World Cup
The all-new Club World Cup will be held until July 13, 2024 in the United States and will see 32 of the world’s best teams compete. The DAZN platform and Fifa have formalized an agreement for the broadcast of this event. “The new FIFA Club World Cup is an inclusive, merit-based tournament that will be the pinnacle of global club football, capturing the imagination of players and fans around the world”welcomed Gianni Infantino in a press release.
• July 4: Oasis in sight
To say that this event was expected is an understatement. The group Oasis has reformed, after the long estrangement between the two brothers Noël and Liam Gallagher and has announced a tour which will begin in Cardiff. Baptized « Oasis Live’25 »it will have 17 dates in the United Kingdom and Ireland, before dates in North America, Asia, Oceania and South America.
• July 5: a 100% French Tour de France
The Great Loop starts from Lille, a special Tour de France since the route will be 100% French. A rather rare occurrence since it is only the third time in 40 years. The Tour route will nevertheless revive several traditions, starting with that of the grand finale on the Champs-Élysées, which the organizers were forced to give up in 2024 due to the Paris Olympics.
• July 11: Superman Returns
It is also a highly anticipated return: that of Superman. The superhero will return to the cinema in a feature film by James Gunn, with David Corenswet (Hollywood, The Politician We Own This City, Pearl) to play Clark Kent. This film is supposed to mark a major turning point in the reboot of the DC cinematic universe.
• August 6 and 9: 80th anniversary of the atomic bomb in Hiroshima and Nagasaki
Three days of horror and global trauma. In 1945, the United States dropped atomic bombs on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. A carnage which left between 103,000 and 220,000 dead and precipitated the capitulation of Japan and the end of the Second World War.
• November 10: COP 30 in the heart of the Amazon
A very symbolic place. Cop 30 will be held until November 21 in Belém, in northern Brazil. A city located at the gateway to the Amazon, whose forest, a precious ally against global warming, is more threatened than ever. This thirtieth conference will also mark 10 years of the Paris climate agreement.
• November 13: 10 years of Bataclan
Another anniversary, that of the 10th anniversary of the Bataclan attack, on November 13, 2015. That evening, a series of simultaneous attacks was perpetrated in Paris and Saint-Denis by terrorists. The Bataclan concert hall is one of the places attacked. 131 people lost their lives and 350 were injured that evening. Claimed by the Islamic State, these attacks remain the deadliest ever committed in France.

• Justin Trudeau heading out?
The Canadian federal elections are due to take place in 2025, but the date has not yet been set. They must take place no later than October 20, 2025. The last were won in 2021 by Justin Trudeau (160 seats obtained out of 338), but after ten years in power, his coalition is hanging by a thread and the Prime Minister age 50 is at its lowest in the polls.
• Release of Switch 2
Rumors are rife about the release date of the Switch 2, but we still don’t know precisely when the console will be available for purchase. It should be officially presented by Nintendo by the end of the first quarter, then launched a few months later.
• Horizon end of 2025 for GTA VI
The same goes for the GTA VI video game. The long-awaited baby Take-Two Interactive, parent company of Rockstar Games, is scheduled for the end of 2025. The trailer for the game posted online on December 5 revealed images of wild chases, opulent evenings aboard yachts, as well as a novelty in the franchise: the presence of a female main character.
• Season 5 of Stranger Things
How will the adventures of El, Mike, Steve, Dustin and their friends in Hawkins end? Season 5 release date Stranger Things has still not been revealed, but it is expected for 2025.
